Awesome Plugin fixes XML-RPC Formatting Problem
« on: March 19, 2009, 08:25:39 AM »
I belong to the WP XML-RPC mailing list and received this email yesterday:

I put together a small plugin that uses the common hacks that have been floating around to work around the bracket stripping in XML-RPC requests caused by libxml2/PHP problems.  The plugin is available as part of the plugin directory at:

   http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/libxml2-fix/

and you can read about it at:

   http://josephscott.org/archives/2009/03/wordpress-libxml2-episode-iv-a-new-plugin/

Now that this plugin is available I've closed ticket 7771 (http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/7771
) and will be pointing people to this plugin if they are on a host that won't upgrade to the versions of PHP and libxml2 that fix this problem.

I installed it on a blog that wasn't formatting correctly and it fixed it!

Search keywords: title broken, no title in blog, links broken, blog formatted wrong, hosting host problem, posts look weird

Great!
I never had problems with that myself, but I appreciate people like you who don't just lament on problems but actually do something about it!
A big thumbs up!

But this problem appears to have already been fixed.

My host had expressed helplessness at the php error in server software.

About 3 weeks back this angled bracket problem has vanished at my blog for new posts.

They are perfect now.

This plugin is a bit too late in coming.

Shiv

I just noticed a blog that one of my posts has been posted on is now doing this, although other posts on that same blog appear to be fine, maybe it's because i always spin my posts and that is what causes the problem. I've opened a ticket and they said

"That post will get picked up by our checking code and you get recredited automatically. Your post then gets published again so you end up with the right number of working links." So hopefully this issue is resolved, (or a system is in place to resolve it) I will check that post again in a few days and follow up

best regards

Roger

Spinning the post doesn't cause the problem.  The problem is caused when a host uses incompatible versions of PHP and Libxml2. So what probably happened in this case is the host upgradded one or both of these to an incompatible version which caused XML-RPC to start stripping brackets thus breaking the posts.

Actually upon further investigation my other blogs on this server(i have a couple of clients with their own 1wl accounts that i manage for them) both had the same problem.
my host (the most brilliant ForLinux.co.uk who do dedicated servers only) did me a recompile using the expat libray instead of xmllib and it fixed the problem instantly.

Best regards
Roger
