Getting started
« on: January 10, 2012, 01:46:19 AM »
Hi Jon,

Great forum!

I am wondering if you can help me out? One thing I do understand is if you don't have a web-presents you have nothing. That said, I have no idea how to build a web-site or even what kind of a web-site is needed for Internet Marketing. I am good at wordpress though. I have been seeing something about review sites and am wondering how to go about setting one up. For all the hundreds of thousands of emails that hit my inbox there is literally nothing telling me how to go about doing this.

Some offer ready made template systems but I have good reason to pause at this option, to become entrapped by someone else's coding and unable to edit anything is not an option, as far as I can see. I did that once with a web-site and paid dearly for that mis-step. I couldn't edit anything without paying out the nose for simple chances and I have vowed never to be enslaved like that again.

I don't know why but no one seems to touch on this subject and it's would appear this is the first step to getting started. Can you help?

Thank you

Thanks

The Guardian newspaper in the UK is currently running a case study on how to set up a blog for income. It's about half way through. They have a web site for this at http://bloggingcasestudy.com/. There is also a book called (I think) pro blogger, which, I am told, is covering the same sort of area. The newspaper articles tell you how to choose a domain name, how to get a host (look at Jorchav's sig on these forums) how to set up a blog. You need a host that can allow SQL and word press blogs. Jorchav's do that. Don't worry about setting up the blog because if you choose the right host, you will get a cpanel (control panel) which will set word press up for you, using fantastico. If you want to build your own website, there is good, reasonably priced software out there that allows you to basically drag and drop and create the site you want, the way you want. I can provide a link if you want.

Sounds like the real issue here is that you want to have some kind of business but have no idea about what it should be.

Brett, where is that post I write to you ages back about what is needed?
Ah, here it is: http://jlforums.com/general-chatter/ignorance-is-a-catalyst-for-learning/msg44463/#msg44463

This might look like it goes back further than you need, but it probably does not.

Answer the fundamental questions and the others will seem much easier.

Anyway, on the offchance that you are past that stage and you have a business plan all ready to roll and it includes review sites you could check this out:
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&q=review%20sites%20in%20wordpress

In the end, starting your online business is going to require lots and lots of use of that marvelous invention the internet search engine. It is a great way to research what is available to you, how to do it and where to get your needed tools and resources. I do not think there is a shortcut here because it is by going through the research process that you will be able to see just what is out there.

For that reason here's another search to check out:
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&q=basic%20business%20planning

And maybe before the business planning comes life planning a topic I mentioned in my linked forum post above, so here's a search on that topic:
Actually, I found a link where the folks at the site think as I do. I will favourite this one: http://www.startupnation.com/start-a-business/life-plan/1/

When I read this, I was hoping you'd reference 'my hero.'  ;)

Back to CEOMom -

One thing I have learned is that it's not really feasible for someone else to show new internet marketers how to make money online, do internet marketing, or even build websites.  Actually, I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials out there, and just as many services that will teach you - for a cost.  Some of these are great and can speed up your ability to get started.

However, most of what many 'newbies' ask can be answered through their own learning curve.  Think about it - if you're spending 1-2 hours per day researching, reading, and figuring out your questions, won't you therefore be a much stronger individual in the long-run?  Hopefully, that's what you want!

Further, once you start learning, you'll figure out that it's actually quite fun and you'll then understand how to interpret much of the tools available online.
Here to research, learn, implement, succeed and then give back to others.

That's why I have started to use Google search links.
It seems to me that the BIG questions we need to sort out for ourselves. The should I have a business and what kind of business questions, followed by 'What is SEO' type stuff.

The things that I found very useful later on were being able to ask questions about details. The stuff that other people can answer definitively, quickly and accurately yet would take hours of research and learning on one's own.

That post by 'your hero' for example, would mean almost nothing to a person who had not already started down the 'should I run a business' path but it could save untold hours of research for one who had decided that Adsense sites, in quantity, was the way to go. But even that post did not answer everything.

You just clearly outlined my own learning path.  It's almost spooky how 'Spot-On' you are here.

Disclaimer:  I'm new as well...
Those 'Big questions' are usually what newer Internet Marketers *Think* they need answers to.  As they are indeed new, they also do not yet know the detailed questions to ask.  Moerover, it becomes frustrating when more experienced members don't actually give them the information they think is needed.

For the average person, it takes quite a bit of work and time to learn enough to get over that hump.  However, once you do, it starts to become a lot of fun.  The work and learning both don't end, but it's great to have the pieces coming together.
Here to research, learn, implement, succeed and then give back to others.

I have been down that path with every business I have started and one sees the same things happening to people time after time.
There ain't nothing new. ;)
