How To Structure Your Website Properly?
« on: January 17, 2012, 07:30:50 PM »
I've noticed when going after long tail keywords, that my urls get broken down by Google when I use a couple subfolders.

For example, say the keyword is dog food.

Using subfolders on my site, my url result shows up as http:// mydomainnamehere.com/.../     with no text of the actual page showing up.

While others websites url will show up as: http:// theirdomainnamehere.com/gooddogfood.html

I can see that Google highlights the "dog food" portion of the url in the results, like they do in the title and description. So, it must be good for SEO, right?

I'm using 2 folders on the site in question, such as  http:// mysite.com/states/california/dogfoodincalifornia.html

Here's the question Jon, how do I get the whole url to show up?  Only use one subfolder?  http:// mysite.com/states/dogfoodincalifornia.html? Or does this just depend on the length of the full url?

It is impossible for me to load up all the pages in the same directory, I have too many.  I wouldn't be able to edit them easily if I had to.

Thanks for the feedback in advance...

Paul

Having the keywords in the url gives a small boost, but not much of one. It's far more important that the keywords be on the page and, especially, in the anchor text of the links aimed at your site.

Google truncates the urls if they are too long, but just because it's not highlighted in the display doesn't mean they are not giving you the boost from the keywords being in the url.
