Is it me?
« on: July 14, 2010, 08:35:54 AM »
Is it me or has there been only one email with one link available to write for this month sent on July 6th?  Just want to make sure I haven't been dropped from the email list or something.  I get the marketing emails just fine.   :)  Is this over?

thanks

brian

Thanks, Meg for pointing out.

I am not sure why but till now there're only 38 views over almost 48 hours.

Response as a percentage of views is good though.

I have a FEELING - nothing more than that, that many people want to write articles for IM or write articles for others until it actually comes down to doing it! I often say I want to do it but I do have an excuse - I am a part time student and any spare time I have should be going towards my studies. Of course, I could always write an article on the books I am reading.  ;D

The latest one was written in 1931 by an emeritus Professor of Geology (ie retired, so probably at least 65 years old). This was written well before the 2nd World War, so when he refers to "The War" he means World War I. The book is about roads in the British Isles (and a little about elsewhere) and covers how roads came into being, the surfaces used, etc. Did you know that they tried out rubber roads? And in London, some of the streets were paved with wooden blocks. Macadam and Telford were 2 important roads' engineers and Macadam gave his name to a particular surfacing of roads (using small stones). This was great for horses but not for cars, so they introduced asphalt and tar to bind the macadam surface, producing things like tarmacadam! Horse owners complained that roads that were suitable for cars were not so, for horses - the horses could not get sufficient purchase on the roads to pull such heavy loads. The author said that some people felt that horses should be taxed off the roads as being too slow and that horse shoes and iron brakes (for going downhill) were damaging the roads for cars! That book was written only 80 years ago, within some people's lifetime (though not mine - quite).

He also covered a lot of history of roads and said that when people wanted to take a coach from Holyhead in Wales over to Ireland (that route is still available), the roads in Wales were so bad that the coach had to be dismantled and portered (ie physically carried by porters) to the Holyhead terminal for transport across to Ireland.

Sorry, this is totally off topic  :-[

Hey Meg
I, too, think it could be a case of wanting to until the time comes to actually do the work.  Writing articles can be tedious, can take more time than one thought; in short, can be a thankless job.  I, myself, find writing articles to be soothing.  If I have to write articles on topics I know nothing about, it takes more work, but I am learning about the subject for the article (kinda like going to Internet University) and I do like to learn.
If the articles are on topics I am passionate about, it is difficult to stop the flow.  But, hey, that's just me  :D

Very good reply Leona, and oh so true!

When you are researching you are learning, whether you want to learn or not..  Maybe someone will create a
degree we could get for research. ::)

Our roads in my neighborhood are red brick set in the late to early 1900s. I love it when knotheads try to blast down them. Because they've settled in various odd ways they work great as speed bumps!

Interesting bit on roads.  8)

In the UK, you can get a Master's degree in research (M.Res)  ;D - I DON'T have one. Wish I did - it looks a very interesting degree but VERY expensive.

On the other hand, using AA, IAW and IAF probably do a lot of the same!  ;D

What a fantastic house! I love old houses, even though they have high ceilings, which are hard to clean and decorate, and lots of odd corners, which gather dust. That's interesting about brick roads working as "speed bumps". Maybe I should try writing some of these articles up (on roads and history), maybe there is a market there somewhere and perhaps someone would be interested in adding links. Have to think about that.  ;D

Ain't technology great Meg?  ???   Jon's stuff works great, makes my job a lot easier..

Degree, got one  in accounting, did that for way tooo many years.  Did not like it!
NEVER actually used the degree - as soon as I graduated and was State tested, I had to go out and find a job
then learn to make a living ---  WAS NOT LIKE THE TEXTBOOKS SAID!

The degree just  got me in the door of a lot of places I may not have got in without it!
Theory??  Why??   Had to take it - They test you on it, but it has not been used in business in a hundred years.

Love the new tech stuff, I was born too early! ::)  Now, as long as your computer works and your connection
don't shut down, you can find any thing you need to know on line.
