HI John,

I have a couple of questions

1....I see some members have added and avatar to their profile. How do I go about doing that?

I looked into my 'Profile' but there is no option to add an avatar image.

2...How do I set up to receive instant email response to any post added to my thread?

3...How do I subscribe to a thread?

1. Hover over "Profile" (along top bar) Click on "Forum Profile". At left is a panel that gives an avatar option

2. At the bottom of a message thread at the right hand side is "Notify" This will send you an email when that thread changes.

3. Not sure what you mean by "subscribe" - is that not the same as notify? If you just mean that you want to reply, click on "reply" or "quote"

With your answer to No1..if, as you say, I hover over 'Profile', the only visible options are Summary and Account Related Settings.

If I then go to Account Related Settings there is no options under that heading for adding an avatar?

Wow, I just spent 20 minutes after signing in to the forums, doing what I usually do when in a new place, looking around for how to introduce myself — with a photo, no less.

At first I thought I'd somehow lost 30-odd years of insightful computer competence, because I couldn't see any link to do so. Duh!

Then a quick search for "avatar" (hoping it's the right keyword to use) gives me this thread & solution.

Trouble is, in this otherwise very nicely setout forum, it appears I have to do 5 anonymous posts before I get to "sign my name & show my face", so to speak. Wow, let me think, what posts can I chuck up here...no, no, look at that, I've already lost focus; I'd better get back to ignoring all the great offers & perusal of posts, & go do those training videos on how to use The Best Spinner, seeing as how I've coughed up the cash for it.

I spend my whole life trying to get past my childhood "shyness", but I have to revert back every so often, like in here. Maybe lots of people don't feel that some form of visual identifier, eg. avatar/photo is helpful in a text-based online community, but I sure do!

Anyway, is it possible when we first signin to the JL Forums that a little intro NOTE could popup or slide-in or what to give us lonesome new forum neighbours some handy hints like "Welcome. Please post 5 times before you can put your sweet little mugshot up here for all to see, haha!" ?

Nevertheless, I'm sure in about 20 more business minutes of watching the training videos, I'll have 4 more threads to post so I know who I am, & anyone else does who's looking.

Just wish it was obvious for new residents to your forum, Jon.

But today I'm a customer; you & I both know it's guaranteed everyone of us will complain about something one day or another; after all, customers are never as familiar with the business they're buying from — nor should they ever be — as those people working IN or RUNNING the business.

It's cool, no sweat.    I'm working through the video stuff BEFORE I have a go at The Best Spinner, even though it's been open on my Desktop all morning, waiting for me to have a go.

But my BP/wife says, "Do the videos first this time. You always jump in & fiddle & test & miss something obvious!"

Oh well... I actually bought it for her; she's the content freak & we've got to save her time. TBS to the rescue, ta, mate.

LOL. Things can NEVER be too simple. I think it was Einstein who said something like, "the more complex the idea, the simpler the language you must use to get it across". I like to think of communication as being like a water pipe. It only has a certain diameter, so it can only carry a certain amount of water. If water is a mix of the message (the idea) and the WAY in which you put that message across, then the harder the idea (message) is to understand, then the more space it takes up in the pipe and the less space is left available for HOW you present that idea.

Even I'm wondering how can I receive notifications of the topics I reply to. I want something that's in vB and mybb. When I reply to a thread, I subscribe to it and can view the subscribed thread list from within my usercp.

Click on "notify"
