Help with trigger based email service
« on: March 10, 2013, 01:12:19 PM »
Hi!

I have an idea that I would like to implement, but am not sure how best to go about it. Would appreciate any tips or pointers.

I have a blog where I would like to include some free photography lessons for people to read.  I am putting each lesson on a new page.  What I would like is to create an email list where:

-people can sign up to get notification whenever I put up a new lesson
-I can email them when I have a product or offer that they might be interested in

The above should be pretty straightforward using Aweber (which I signed up for last month, so am still figuring it out!) right?

But then I also want another form/button at the end of each lesson that will send the person an email with exercises or practice ideas specifically related to that particular lesson. I asked Aweber support about this, but they said that they don't support trigger based email messages.

I could just provide a link to a new page, or download, but this would waste a good opportunity to build on my list, and to interact with the readers (I would like to be able to offer the reader an opportunity to reply to the email and ask for critique or suggestions on their "homework").

Any ideas how to implement this?

Thank you :-)

Nicola

Hello Nicola

Right now I don't know a solution that does this right out of the box. It probably is not that hard to have something like that coded, it might be possible to have a feature like that in membership site services like FastMember, the question is whether this is a feature that enough others would need, too.
A last resort would be to have it coded on on freelancer or odesk or a site of the like...

Thanks for the reply! I am not sure it is going to be something that is going to get a lot of readers, so I am not sure it is worth any investment, I just thought maybe someone, somewhere had a solution! I will post it on the ideas forum :-)

Good idea - maybe someone else has experience with something that could help.

There are a number of companies that do trigger based emails
but I don't think that is what you're looking for.

The triggers are normally a birthday, anniversary, low stock on an item etc.

Just google "trigger based emails" in quotes and you can have a look.

Yeah I am probably calling it the wrong thing. I want the reader to "trigger" the email themselves by pressing a button/filling in a form.
I guess I could set up a separate email list for each lesson, but I think readers would get fed up with belonging to loads of lists and having to opt in etc.

Hmm maybe there is a way to do this with aweber - I left that service quite a while ago so I am not sure whether it works as intended but if you set up a list for every lesson and then do an automatic add to your main list after the first and only email has been delivered, this might be what you want to achieve. Not sure though whether people have to do the double opt in with aweber again on the list change or whether a double opt in done once for the "entry" list is good for the main list, too. The autoresonder I am currently at supports it but I donÄt know about aweber...

That might work.. I will have a look at it and see.
I am not totally sold on sticking with AWeber if it doesnt do what I want.
Will let you know if it works!
Thanks!

Can't you just get them to sign up to get your rss feed delivered as emails and select the category that only these lessons appear in as the rss feed that is sent out?

IIRC you can send your rss feed as emails in aweber.

But I dont just want them to get the lesson by email - I want them to read the lesson on the website, and then get extra information and exercises that don't appear online by email.  It's then an extra incentive to join a mailing list.

OK. So I did lesson 1 to see if I could sort something out.
I have one main list for the "photography lessons" for emailing special offers, updates etc.
I then created a separate list with a separate web form and put it at the end of the lesson.  I wrote a "welcome email" for that list with the exercises. I will do a separate list and form for each lesson.
I then created a "rule" on AWeber to automatically add someone who subscribes to one of the individual lessons to the main list.
It seems to be working how I want it, it's just a little bit complicated to set up a new list, and a new form for each lesson. But it works!
Thank you all for your suggestions :-)
