Strange serp results!
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:43:07 AM »
Hi all. Maybe one of you experts (JL?) can help explain something to me. After months of offsite optimisation, l managed to get upto page one on google for my search term. l use 3 different programs to analyse results, including the best Webcompanalyst  ;D
However, although the results sometimes vary slightly from program to program, they are usually the same. The strange thing is, l never get any traffic for this term, even tho l am on page one. l also use SST to see what search terms bring people to my site.

After wondering about this for awhile, l used google's ad preview tool to see where l was listed in the serps, and found to my amazement, l was listed way down on page 12!!! l then checked for other keywords where l was listed high up, only to find the same. Although three different programs all displayed my site at roughly the same position (page 1 or 2), l was listed so far down as to be virtually invisible in google, when l checked the serps in google's adwords preview tool.

Obviously, this explains why l am not getting any traffic for these terms.

l am not in the USA, so maybe viewing the serps from outside the States, gives me different results.

Am l missing something here?
Could anyone explain this strange anomoly?

Thanks

That's it.  Google displays results to searchers by geo-coding the results based on your IP address.  So even if you search the USA version of Google (google.com) it will still show you results skewed for France if you're based in France, etc.

I guess they know what they're doing, but I've always found that very inconvenient and illogical.  If I'm searching .com it's because I want USA-based results.  If I wanted French results I'd go to google.fr or whatever.

l see! So then if l am outside the States, the rankings l see in WebCompAnalyst are not really correct  ???

Whats the point of using a ranking program to check your rankings for various countries, if these are not really correct?

Are you selecting "United States" in the drop-down?  That should override Google's local geocoding.

Yes l am, and l see that l am on page 1 of the serps, but if l check to see where l am via google adwords preview tool,
l am listed on page 12 ???
