What is the Best Forum Software out there?
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:02:56 AM »
Hey,
I was checking out the polling software that Jon has in this forum.

Is Simple Machines Forum the best out there or are there others that beat it?

SMF is probably the best of the free forum software. It incorporates multi-media, including video, has good spam/spammer controls and is theme/plug-in based.

vBulletin is still one of the best of the paid forum software packages.

Thanks Profit clinic.

What other free fourms would you even compare to SMF then?

I'm not sure if other forum software supports this as well, but SMF also makes it super simple to upgrade to the latest version.  Two or three button clicks and the latest bug fixes and patches are installed in seconds.

That's one of the reasons I love it.

Im currently putting together my first forum on my webinarstraining.com website.  I am using Kunena which is a joomla forum and it looks pretty good.  I quite like it as it ensures everything is integrated.

Im told vbulletin is the best by far of the forum softwares but I am a cheapskate so will invariably go for free.  Which reminds me I want to betatest your next software Jonathan!  ;)

Whatever it is I hope its better then this for handling MS IE.. I have to use Crazy Broswer in order to post here because if I use IE the stupid thing will fight me over filling in any more then the first part of a discussion box! It's crazy.. the thing will bounce like mad. But with Crazy Browser it sits still.. you'd think it would be the other way around! I don't know if anyone else has this problem but it's akin to having a car that stalls at every light.. wait a minute.. I have one of those too!  :-\

I'm using Google Chrome as my default browser and so far have had no problem on this forum (or elsewhere, that I know about).

Thanks for your reply. I'm curious if others are having problems using IE here.

Recently I had my computer infected with several trograns. Every browser on my system.. IE, FireFox and Chrome were inaccessible! None of them would start up save one... Crazy Browser to the rescue! In every case of these attacks Crazy Browser has saved the day.. just a heads up. You should have a copy on your machine just in case.   8)

I don't run a forum but I do contribute to quite a few in different niches and the general consensus is that SMF is one of the best.

As far as browsers, I gave up using IE a long time ago. Used to use Firefox but found it slowed one or two things. It may be different now as this was quite a while ago. I use Google Chrome now and (touch wood) I've had no problems. It seems to be very lightweight browser and I do like it

Just my thoughts
Eliot

Hi bigmac

No need to google

SMF - Simple Machines Forum - As in the forum that you're looking at right now.

Glance up to the top right of your browser

Hoping this helps

Having founded and sold 3 very large automotive sites with over 60,000 members, I suggest Vbulletin. Hackers and Spammers have a field day with SMF. I still have a forum which I'm taking down because the spammers took over that is SMF. SMF has some nice features, but at the end of the day, Vbulletin is where you want to be. Don't believe me? Look at the software the majority of large forums use, VB. There is a reason.
