I used WoltLab Burning Board at one time with great success. Was pretty easy to manage and had a nice clean style.
I also see vBulletin get used a lot and I'm a member of quite some pro sites which use it.

In general, everyone on the net know that the best forum software currently available is the SMF and vBulletin.

After making several forums that are still active with different software (phpBB, vBulletin, SMF), I get the conclusion that the SMF in fact still have more advantages than vBulletin.

SMF = free, vBulletin = pay
SMF has a php script structure is simpler than vBulletin, so the faster loading time
SMF is easier to understand its structure and easily modified than vBulletin

I had a Simple Machines Forum set up on one of my sites and someone from Russia kept joining with a fake email, so
I went through all the help files and upped the security on it, but he somehow hacked my site and over wrote the
forum and index.html with his own page.

When i searched Google he had hacked a whole bunch of sites with the same page of his.
Simple Machines Forum is supposed to be one of the good forums from what i hear.
