Trouble with Hosting Transfer
« on: April 19, 2014, 07:05:47 AM »
I am having a heck of a time trying to transfer my nichejet blog to my own hosting. After adding the domain name to my hosting service (hostgator) then setting up the wordpress blog on hostgator, whenever I try to access the wordpress blog on hostgator I get transferred to the wordpress blog on your server. I am following the PDF that you provided but I am wondering if I am missing something. Did I miss a step somewhere?
Thank you,
Judy

Have the correct name servers been entered into the registrar's settings for your domain?

Not yet. The PDF has that listed as the last step. The step before that is for me to import the content into my wordpress blog on hostgator but I am not able to do that because I keep getting transferred over to niche jet's server where my currently is.

What do you mean when you say that you are 'trying to access the wordpress blog on hostgator'? Do you mean that you are loading the domain name in your browser?

You need to view the site on your new hosting account before changing the nameservers just to ensure everything transfered properly. In the PDF you will see this paragraph:

"Now get with your host and ask them how you can view the directory in your
web browser via the IP or some other means, in order to ensure it is
working/displaying properly. Some of the bigger hosts like hostgator provide
access to a system, which will display web content before it a domain is
pointing to it."

You can either do this via your hosts file (I don't recommend doing this unless you're familiar with it) or you can get with your host and tell them your situation and ask them if they have a way for you to view the site before changing the nameservers. Or you can just change the nameservers if you think everything transferred properly and not deal with it.

Thank your Donal and Josh for your help. I contacted Hostgator and they are going to take care of the transfer for me but this is what they need:

current IP / Hostname

Who is niche jet's hosting company?

Is it a shared, VPS or dedicated account?

Does this account have an SSL Certificate?

All they need is the cPanel login URL, UN and PW, which was provided to you after we created the site. For support issues please submit a ticket to AskJonLeger.com

I did submit a ticket yesterday and now I am waiting for a response. There is a specific form that Hostgator has you fill out when they do transfers and they ask for all this.
Now I have another issue. I can't even get to cpanel  as it is showing as an untrusted site.  It has been one issue after another just getting this transferred. I am so happy with my new blog but have been stuck at this step for over a week. I would be grateful if Nichejet would offer the hosting transfer as well even if I have to pay to have it done.

AFAIK (and I could be wrong), NicheJet WILL do this for you for free, if you put a ticket in https://askjonleger.desk.com/

I really hope so Meg but I didn't see anything in the PDF about them offering to do it. Between not being able to get this blog transferred and the fact that I can no longer access the cpanel I am at my wits end!
