Author Topic: 224,000,000 is it worth going after the keywords (Read 2748 times)

Ok Guys quick questions

I have found a niche I am interested in and the keywords I want to target get 90,000 searches a month when doing a search on the keywords the competition is a whopping 224,000,000 however looking at the top #1 website they only have 155 back links according to backlink checker.

Is it safe to say that I can get a site up add tons of links an bump him off

? even with 224,000,000 it kinda dont make enses that if there is so much competition that the top guy would only have 155 backlinks

Am I missing something ??

"I'm your huckleberry" (Doc Holliday, Tombstone) .. I'll take a stab at it by throwing a question back at ya: what are the QUALITY of those 155 backlinks? Personally, I'd rather have 10 really good quality backlinks vs 100 from unrelated, so-and-so sites.

Someone else may have something better to offer. I just had to add my two cents.

It's very hard to generalise about this without knowing the keyword phrase.

At the time of posting the phrase lorem ipsum dolor has 26,000,000 competing pages in google and 60,500 searches but there are no advertisers (I wonder why not!!!).

One thing I always do is check if there's a number of advertisers in the right hand column. That gives you a rough idea whether the keyword phrase is worth anything or not.

Of course the phrase might not have been thought of by adwords advertisers

Also check what the sites are on the first page and see how many are top quality sites eg - wiki, amazon etc

I actually redid the search on keyword tool and did an exact search for the phrase and the monthly search volume came down to 2900 searches month and on a google search only 1,840,000 other competing sites and there are advertisers 2 on top and 7 down the rigth hand side of the page.

The 155 links were not really relevant links for the site that is showing and the competing sites are like amazon etc these products cost $200-$2000 dollars each so I think I am going to give it a go what you think

That information gives a bit more insight and 2900 searches is pretty good, and the fact that people are paying to be up there usually means there's money to be made.

Also a lot of the time it's not the number of searches that are made but whether the people want to buy or are just looking for information.

In the high end niches a couple of hundred searches a month can bring nice rewards if they're targeted right.

You can also think of it like backing a horse. You either win or lose.

You pay your $10 and invest a little bit of time to build your website. If after a year it's doing nothing then you don't have to re-invest another £10. Just let it drop.

If a site only makes $2 a month then it's in profit. As long as it's not costing you anything then that's great. $2 a month is not hard

In my opinion the number of sites google shows for a search term is not really important as to how how hard it will be to compete - the lorem ipsum example shows that, too.
On top of that, this number is only a rough estimate, if you skip the first pages and go to the last page of the SERPs that number will most of the time shrink miraculously

The number of backlinks your competition has is much more of an indicator of the strength of the competition, but as it was said before, it depends very much what the quality of those backlinks are. If you are a 1waylinks or 3waylinks member I would definitely give it a try!

One more question if I may

would it be better to have lets say www.xyzwxy.com or www.xyz-wxy.com how does google handle the dash ---

My understanding was Google does not count the dash and the only negative on using a dash is for remembering a site lets say you tell someone your website its going to be a lot easier for them to remember it without the dashes

Whats your thoughts on the dash ?? when I search the keyword tool it does not count the dashes and gives me the exact search for the words I am targeting

I tend to go for domains without dashes.
Although it is funny - some people really expext dashes if you tell them about a domain name ...
In terms of ranking I have made good experiences with both - domains with dash and domains without...

I agree with Mike on this one.

I look for a com, net or org name without dashes first.
If they're not available and I really want the name I would look for the words separated by dashes.

If you tell someone that your domain is mybrilliantdomain.com
then most people will type that in their web browser and not my-brilliant-domain.com

Some pretty good stuff here guys. It might pay out to get your domains with and without dashes.. and create a redirect to one or the other. Then you're covered. I noticed radio stations are forever adding the "soandso, dash, soandso, dash" when announcing their sites.

I like the idea also of testing a site to see if it is worth pursuing. Reminds me of the advice often given in stock investing (and one I follow)... just get a foothold first and see if it's worth going further.

The number of competitors for a keyword actually doesn't really mean anything...

It's the strength of the competition in the top 10 results that really counts...

No matter how many millions of competitors there are for a keyword, if the sites in the top 10 are extremely weak, you can outrank them quite easily.

There are some pretty good tools out there that will help one target appropriate niches to go after. The amount of competing pages doesn't matter, if the sites aren't properly optimized for the niche...
