Interesting read. Thanks Meg. I've seen for a long time now that Google favors big brand over the little guy when letting them get away with all kinds of policy violations from Google's point of view.

I am not sure whether this this really means big brands can do anything or how big a brand you have to be - There are a lot of brands getting penalties, too as of lately (http://www.linkresearchtools.com/case-studies/ for a few examples). Up to now I could not find a distinguishing line between what some brands can do and get away with and what other big brands did and get penalized. In my eyes the worst case would be if all those penalties were manual - that would really mean it was all in the grace of a few google engineers. I really do hope it is just the google algorithm being... less perfect than google wants it to be (politely said...)

Years ago at the start of the social bookmarking boom I hacked a little piece of JavaScript to make a kind of a plugin for use on HTML sites. It automatically submitted a brief extract from the page to a scad of bookmarking sites. I built in a fixed link-back to my site.

I got a lot of links from that 30 minute exercise.

Now I think I see a WordPress widget coming on. I think it'd not be hard to harness my content database to give something of value to both me and web masters. ;)

As for these suggested flaws. I think that there is no such thing as a coincidence. I find myself wondering about how much some of these folks are putting into paid Google services.

One problem though is this. In the case of the Houzz site, for example. The site s a good one with rich content and genuine reader value. What is the calibre of displaced content pages? I'd bet that in many cases the content, absent Houzz would be a bit, shall we say 'thin'?

In some of the niches the guy looked at, I'd not expect to see any decent content so the choice is between rubbish pages and really bad pages. That's always going to be a toughie!
