Google Indexes
« on: January 09, 2012, 07:32:23 AM »
Hi all,

this isn't a big deal yet I'm just wondering why if I search "site:my-url", google also indexes some 'strange' pages,
e.g: my-url.com/page/3  with title: TITLE part 3
my-url.com/page/10 with title: TITLE part 10
       and so on...
...whereas I've never published those pages..
on the contrary, I don't find those pages when search on yahoo and bing. both search engines show normally all urls I've published.

thanks,
Natan

So I may be asking the obvious, but if you leave out the meta tags for noindex, nofollow, your pages will get indexed.

Because they are indexed doesn't mean that Google put them anywhere in the index where others would find them.

Your use of the phrase "never published"??  If it is not uploaded onto a server that has access to the web, then it is not published.  Otherwise, it is published.

Have a great day

Are you talking about a WordPress blog here?
Or is it a straight HTML site or maybe some other CMS (Joomla, Dolphin etc)?

I think i agree with that..  :)

I was talking about a wordpress blog.. :) ,
just to let you guys know, all of my WP use 'all in one seo pack' plugin. As I'm not to good in determining which options must be checked (e.g: use no index for tag archieve, use tags for meta keywords, etc.) within the plugin, I leave it as default. I thought it could be the cause why G indexed those strange pages. Otherwise, I've no idea about it. I'm just too raw for this.  :-[
As said, this really isn't a big deal yet any new information will be very helpful for a newbie like me.  :)

Yes, leaving the default setting is pretty much OK with these plugins.

These pages you are seeing, do they exist if you paste the urls into your browser bar?

SEO plugins usually are set to reduce the number of ways that SE's can see your content. Don't worry too much about it though. Google knows how WP works and is very good at presenting the right pages to searchers. IMHO people worry too much about duplicate content in WP. Now, Dolphin 7 - that's another matter entirely!

Have you set permalinks in your site settings in WordPress?
If you haven't then do so - unless your site has been around for a while, in which case you need to add another plugin: http://scott.yang.id.au/code/permalink-redirect/ that'll make sure that if any links change in your site that people will still get to the right place. Check the setings but you will want pretty much everything set to 'on'.

Add this plugin, activate it and then set up your permalinks.

weird, but it seems that G has no longer indexed those strange pages for one of my wp (I just checked prior to this post). I thought it's a matter of time for other ones.

when browse, it showed 'not found' just like we found no post/article resulted by search-box query.

and yes, I always set permalinks with: %post% when build a blog.
I think i'll consider the plugin you recommended andrew, as it is important to not provide my visitors with an error page...  ;D
