Multiple Sites on the Same IP , will it do harm to SEO?
« on: May 26, 2010, 06:34:27 PM »
I have built over 10 sites after being a member of 3waylinks. Now the problem is, I find most of these sites are on the same IP. As more sites to be built, more of them will have a same IP. I wonder if this will hurt my rankings in Google.

I am using DreamHost's shared account, which is not possible to control IP for sites. If I buy their VPS, then it's possible to set my sites as groups and assign different IPs to each group. But the cost will go up. If I purchase unique IP for each site, that will be $3.95/ip/month.

There is a host called seohosting (a division of hostgator). They provide C class IP and webmasters can assign C class IP to each group of websites. However, theis diskspace and bandwidth is a bit limited. For a hosting plan at $35/month, they provide 5 IPs, 20GB diskspace, 200GB bandwidth.

Is it neccesary?

Thanks!

Strictly speaking, no, it's not a bad thing to have multiple sites on one IP.  However, if you're doing anything shady that Google doesn't like, yes, it's a bad thing, because it connects your sites together.

However, if you're doing anything Google doesn't like then just having your sites on different IPs won't help long-term.  If you use the same registrar information, remember that Google can connect the dots that way, too.

But if your sites are high quality content sites and you're not doing anything that will draw attention to yourself ("black hat" techniques), then being on the same IP isn't a big deal.

That's been my experience anyway.

Thanks Jon!

I am using 3waylinks and article marketing to get backlinks to my sites, no black hat. Then it seems it not a problem to have a same IP.

That is an interesting way to look at it.

I have a LOT of sites on the same IP address, and get good rankings for them.

I guess that as long as you stay white hatted, you will be fine, but if one gets banned, they will all go.

Stay white hat, and you will be fine, go black hat, and you will go to boot hill (six-shooter and stetson optional).
