A pity that he didn't go into more detail on how to reduce the file size without or without too much quality loss.
A very good program for lossless file sie reduction is pngcrush.
When I create the pics myself I also take a lot of care using the options of the Save/Export dialog of GIMP to get the smallest file size possible. (No exif data, no preview, reduce colors, compression as high as possible without visible quality loss etc.)
With site load speed having become so important for google, this really is a good way to please both your visitors and the search engines...

Mike you are SEO guru. I agree with your comments but for novice entry this article is very useful
