Slideup conversion?
« on: July 27, 2011, 12:21:52 AM »
I always think that I don’t fully understand the statistics..  ;D I am still trying to figure out which of my ads perform best.
I recently downloaded a free wordpress plugin: wp slideup. It lets ads slide up on pages.
here is the url: http://softwarp.com/portfolio-post/wp-slideup/
After I used it I could not find any higher conversion, but I did have some additional sales. Is that what they mean?
Anyway, I figure it takes some experience to really exploit the benefits of such a plugin.
Could somebody give my some advice as how to use them best?

Hi Jenny

Well more sales with the same amount of traffic IS a higher conversion rate...

Or did you (by chance) have more traffic than before?

Your conversion rate is number of sales per visitors, so if you have 3 sales per 100 visitors per month, you have a conversion rate of 3%.
Now if your number of visitors is still 100 visitors per month and you now have 5 sales your CR has increased to 5%...

Thanks Mike
I don't think my traffic was up cause my advertising budget was hit a week before.  So i think traffic might be lower.
If my traffic was down, but i had extra sales that means CR right?
And if that's true, then if i buy more ads i should make more sales than with the same ads before right?
I'll check into this now.
Thanks again mike, you were the only one to reply and offer help.
The rest were probably laughing at my question.

Hi Jenny

Cool - if you even had more sales with lower traffic than that means that CR must have improved a lot because it not only made good for the loss of traffic but even lead to more sales.

Are you using tools like google analytics? If so you can set up a goal (a sale is a very good goal) and monitor your conversion rate.

There is one big caveat: How many sales and how much traffic are we talking about?
You see if you have 100 visitors per month and had one sale, and now your conversion rate doubles to 2% you will make 2 sales.
That sounds like impressive statistics (...doubledmy conversion rate!...) - but in fact is completely meaningless as  the numbers are just far too low to gain statistic confidence. Now if we are talking about 10000 visitors per month and 200 sales we are in a region where the statistics become meaningful because a change of 1% equals 100 sales - and that is for sure not a random change that might go in one or the other direction but can be clearly identified as a result of the measures you took on your page.

One thing on asking "dumb" questions: There is nothing like a dumb question! If you don't fully understand something, it is always a good idea to ask someone, as just going on with a lack of knowledge is by far the dumber thing.
I agree that there are some things that I would not ask publicly because admitting I don't know it might leave me feel ashamed.
But rest assured - asking questions about statistics is nothing to be ashamed for  -there are so many people who don't get it first time so nothing to worry about ;-)

I was certainly not laughing! I don't answer questions in this particular forum because I know so little about it!

I just had a look at your post count, Meg.
It seems you do a pretty good job answering a whole lot of questions ;-)

Yes, I enjoy answering questions, where I know the answer.  ;D And I'll even jump in sometimes where I don't - but then I can get caught out!  :-[

There are a number of very helpful people on these forums.  ;)
