What Kind Of Backlinks Do You Focus On?
« on: May 01, 2010, 06:18:10 AM »
There is so much confusion out there when it comes to backlinks that I'm not quite sure where to focus my efforts.

Which type of backlinks are the most important?

Social Bookmarking, Forum Profiles, RSS Feeds, Blog Commenting, Blog Networks, Article Marketing, All The Above?

It's difficult when you are just starting out to try to do all that for several websites. How do you know which ones have the best results so that you're not just wasting your time?

All of the above -- but with an emphasis on in-context links.  Meaning, while it's great to get links from link directory style pages when you can (and they do help a lot), those kinds of links work primarily in Google.  Yahoo and Bing don't attribute nearly as much juice from those kinds of links.

If you focus mostly on article-generate links, or at least links found within the context of a blog post or block of text, you'll gain more traction in all 3 big search engines.  Also, article marketing is good for folks on a budget because if you write well your articles get reposted on other sites, and that means more links for no more effort.

On top of that, the big article sites get crawled and indexed fast, so your articles show up quickly in the search engines and their link juice is applied faster.  Here's a good list from WilsonWeb of article sites:

So then as far as article marketing goes I could write 1 article and spin it 25 times using the best spinner and then upload it to the 25 sites mentioned?

Or can I spin it more than that and then use automation to upload it to hundreds of article sites?

The article says that less is better if it's good content.

"Less is better" - not necessarily.

Instead, I think what should be said is, "Quality, original content is better." Whether it is more or less isn't the real question here, IMO.

Remember that when you are using these tools, you should be proofing what they generate and tweaking it to make it AWESOME content.

Although this thread/blog post is about getting links, hastily spun, non-edited content can surely shoot you in the foot when it comes to establishing yourself as an expert and gaining loyalty and trust from your article readers...not to mention it can completely demolish your CTRs and sales figures!

What's the point in ranking well in the search engines if people get to your site/article and you look like an idiot?

Hey everybody, my site ranks #1 in Google!!!!  But how much money are you making? How many repeat visitors do you generate? What kind of reputation do you have online/offline?

Just sayin.  :)

I go for articles spread over blog networks. There are a lot of services that are offering this now for about $50 a month. I spin one article and submit it once and get around 30-60 backlinks from different sites that show up in yahoo. I have submitted articles to article directories but I don't like doing it as much and I seem to get less links showing up in yahoo.

I personally use all of the above! I use all of Jons linking services 3,1,my and many others.  This makes it somewhat hard to credit one service as being the one giving the most weight so I just say use all that you can.  The more the better when it comes to links.  I pretty much sign up with every blog network possible or linking service and use web 2 and articles.  All of these combined has me doing pretty well for some pretty darn competitive keywords.

I would focus on having as much variety as possible. I think it looks more natural to the search engines that back-links are showing up from a variety of sources.

IE. forum posts, article directories, blog commenting, in context links etc.

I have found only about 6-7 of those directories work for me. PageRank is great but for my purposes I want to know if the category my article is going to end up in gets spidered regularly or not at all. I used to submit to every friggin article directory I could find. I took painstaking steps to make sure each article was unique (try that before T.B.A.S. came about!) and tracking showed only a handful of them brought me any kind of action.

Knowing this I started digging and found that the directories which had ALL pages spidered at least weekly were the best bet for my time and money so I excluded all the others I had been wasting my time on and MY TRAFFIC AND RANKING DIDN'T DROP ONE IOTA!

Along the Topic and in reply or additional information on DIYDAD's post...

I agree that most Article Directory's are a waste of time... IF they are only out for the "Adsense Revenue" there have been too many Article websites that are set up purely as a "Money Spinner" and not with the real interests of the Article Marketing Public, (while I don't frown on making money... after all - isn't that what we are all about? but, it should be said that you also have to give value to your patrons) for some of us Article Website Owners, who are just getting started I would say - don't write us all off. If the script or the site looks stagnant, it is probably not the place to be, but if the webmaster is constantly doing things to keep it fresh on the site, then even the new and upcoming sites are worth looking into and posting occassional articles to.

I am one of the Article Website Owners who care, I can only say that I hope that you guys pop by my site and start using it. I have been doing this for a while now, with my first article site being very easy no registration needed, but I wanted more control over content, and finally found a script that worked for me. So rather than give the first site an overhaul, I started from scratch. What can it hurt?

Anyway, Keep up the excellent topics and text...
