TBS3: Custom Thesaurus fails to work properly.
« on: February 25, 2017, 10:46:33 PM »
i just tested the "Create New Thesaurus"

naming and describing the new thesaurus, i closed the window, and TBS3 immediately went to work and found there were no synonyms (of course its a new thesaurus :) )

so i tried to add a new word/phrase, that had the pipe symbol for multiple suggestions, this gave the same Object error as is standard with this software, so i decided to Continue.

After this i thought it best to go back to standard thesaurus, but in the newly created "My Custom Thesaurus" was not in the list, and i was unable to select the Standard Thesaurus.

so i went back to main screen, and discovered all my article was gone, wiped clean, so i forced TBS3 to close (error every time as usual) , and reopened it.

TBS3 then continued with a new, and repeated type of error box no matter what i tried to do to use the original article txt file.

the workaround to recover my data was to open notepad, and copy everything across to word, then copy from word into TBS3 and resave the file as though it was new.

so basically theres serious issues with the thesaurus functionality that may cause unsuspecting users to loose all their data if they dont know how to workaround the issue that shouldnt exist in the first place.

That error usually means your computer is not connecting to the TBS server. Generally, that has been a problem with the anti virus on your computer, however, all of Jon's "stuff" was moved to a new server recently, so I would suggest asking helpdesk about this. https://askjonleger.desk.com/

I have just tested out the "create new thesaurus" item. I have used it in the past but not much recently because it takes quite a while to create your own thesaurus if you don't have it automated. The new thesaurus is stored on your own computer. I was on my tablet earlier today and don't use TBS on that so had to wait until I was on the laptop to test it out.

I find the best way to create your own custom thesaurus is to create a plain text file, eg in Notepad and save it somewhere. The items within the thesaurus should be in the following format:
illustrate|highlight|indicate|show
show|highlight|indicate|illustrate|illuminate
indicate|illustrate|show|illuminate

The first word on any line is the word that will get highlighted within your TBS text, the other words will show as synonyms for it. you have to create a new line for EVERY word, you will see that "illustrate", "show" and "indicate" each have their own line and synonyms added. I have found excel spreadsheet useful for managing all the combinations.

Once you have your file created, go into the thesaurus tab and double click on "select thesaurus". This brings up the list of thesaurii. Click on the button "add thesaurus from file" and select the file you created. Wait a moment for the next dialogue box to appear and name it. Now open a new document and start using your thesaurus.

sweet, i will give that a try...

i dont really need a customer thesaurus, but its handy to know if i ever did need it then how to make it work properly for some folks who might use a particular writing style, such as novelists.. im no novelist though, hahaha.

You can also use it for foreign languages and it is possible to obtain these in the correct format, so I understand.
