A "space" or a "period" takes a bit to contain it.  It been a few years but I believe 16 bits is used to contain a word, regardless of the number of characters in the word.  If the word is just a single character, such as the as the article "a", it still requires the full 16 bits that defines a word.

That's totally wrong. Every symbol (a space or a letter) takes one byte (8 bits) of storage for 8-bit charsets like iso-8859-1. In UTF8 every symbol requires two bytes (16 bits).

So?  It's been 30 years since I used anything but you make the point.  Spaces and periods require resources and so must be counted.  The question was why was spaces counted.

Now he knows.  You can have the points for being more technically correct than I was.  Let's see how well your memory works 30 years from now on something you haven't used in 30 years.  :)

I'm totally confused.  I'm supposed to enter the API key into some software I'm using, and I can't understand from the URL listed how to get it.  I don't understand the instructions on that page.

If it's the url relating to TBS, then contact helpdesk to ask them. https://askjonleger.desk.com/

If it's for the other software, then you need to ask their support team.
