I am not getting backlink and sitelink figures most of the time
« on: October 28, 2010, 10:52:45 PM »
Is there any fix for this?

The SL and BL columns are typically full of zeros lately.
I get Pagerank numbers okay.

Is this a Yahoo block on my IP address, since I use
WCA quite a bit. Multiple times per day.

Or is there something else going on here?

All the bugginess started on Monday.

There's one thing you cant accuse Jon Leger and his staff of.

Spending too much time at this forum!

On the other hand, it'd be nice if they did reply to customer concerns here, wouldnt it!?

I read every thread on the forums. I just don't usually respond without something of substance to say.

I am aware of a few users haqving this issue and am trying to duplicate it.   So far I have not been able to.  If I can't duplicate it I can't fix it.

Now we know we at least get read, even if our issues are not solved.

That's somewhat comforting.

Let me ask you this: how many keywords do you run before this happens? Does it happen every time or just sometimes?

I'm thinking Yahoo may be blocking "excessive" querying of their siteexplorer tool.

Jon,

1. WCA can fail when we search for ONE term on the very first use of WCA for that day.
Or it can occasionally work for several runs, where each run might be 1-3 terms
Then up comes one of the error msgs.

2. My install on my Win7 machine is set to run as administrator, in case that matters. I think we went this way after it wasnt working without 'run as admin'. On my wife's machine, I think we also run as admin.

3. When my wife is using WCA (but both of us do not use it at the same time - not even in the same hour) she often get the Oman results. (I dont.) She sees a sometimes pattern of getting the Oman results during America's sleeping time, 10pm East Coast till early morning (our day here in Australia).

4. Yes, we've concluded that Yahoo dont like to be interrogated too often. But when we resort to manual Google searches, using the SEOquake plugin, we sometimes get the red error where the LD (link domain) stats should be... on the first page of Google search results. In other words, before we've hit Yahoo "too often over the last hour".

5. While writing this for you, I ran WCA.
First run - 1 keyword - worked fine.
Second run - 3 - fine.
Third run - 6 - half way through the last term it started producing BL=0 and SL=0 results.

If it performed this well every time, we'd be smiling. But alas, the points above are our usual experience.

Gary

PS: Jon, may I be so bold as to suggest that you do your public image a favour when you see a customer asking for your help... by at least writing a note saying you've seen their post. Silence is not always golden.

Do you and your wife share the same IP?

It's possible that Yahoo has tightened how much and how often siteexplorer can be hit.  If you run a lot of keywords NOW, perhaps it takes longer than it used to before you can run more.

I'll do some testing on this to try and figure out how many keywords can be run and how often.

Yes, we are both on the same IP - here at our home office.
But we dont both use WCA at the same time.
In fact, rarely on the same day even. We work on different tasks.

--

I tested again just now. WCA started producing zeroes after 45 good results. That is, 4 sets of 10 results (for 4 keywords). In the middle of results for kw#5, the 0s started to fill the BL and SL columns. I have not used WCA all day, nor done any Google searching for hours. My wife has been doing Google searching tonight but not with WCA.

Next I took the first of the failed terms (#5) and did a regular Google search, turning on SEOquake ... and we get a whole lot of red ink where the Yahoo LD figures should be.

I then used the Google Global plugin for Firefox to view the Google.com (USA) results. Same red ink.

I then turned on personal VPN service to connect (from here in Australia) as if from New York metro. Same result with Yahoo producing red ink in the SEOquake Firefox plugin... in the same way that WCA produced zeroes.

That would suggest it's a Yahoo limit of some kind.

BUT in addition, Pam has had the Oman results the very first time she's run WCA. And also zeroes on the first run. So have I.

So we cant blame Yahoo entirely.

--

Is this relevant?
I have installed WCA to run as admin because I have an admin account and a user account for security reasons on my Windows 7 machine here. Ditto my wife.
Would it work better if I uninstalled from 'run as admin' and just ran it as normal?

Just trying to think of possible solutions here.

Yeah, that's definitely a Yahoo-blocking-you issue.

BUT in addition, Pam has had the Oman results the very first time she's run WCA.

As to the Oman thing, is your wife behind any kind of proxy or anything like that?  Does she have a specific country selected in the drop-down box, and is she checking the "Get results ONLY from this country" checkbox?

Running as Admin just gives the program access to more resources on your PC that it wouldn't otherwise be able to get to.  It doesn't affect what's happening with Yahoo.

Thanks Jon. Your speedy response is appreciated.

I'm wondering why we might be getting "special treatment" from Yahoo which other users are apparently not getting. Ideas?

Also...
I scrolled down further in WCA and there are not zeroes. There are dashes ( - ) in the SL and BL columns.

Jon

I have been getting "Oman" results for a long time when I used USA and "results ONLy from this country". Help desk told me to untick "results ONLY from this country" but that isn't very helpful if I only want USA!
